How Technical Writing Turned Me to a Solidity Dev
Some couple of years back, I was a full-blown Content Marketer. I was working for different brands across Marketing, HR, Tech, and every other thing that brings money.
Gradually, I got to know about crypto, then I started writing about it. I mean, it was fascinating.
From a freelancing point of view, I have always had issues getting paid internationally. Most times, exchangers and platforms would have gulped about 30% of my funds.
But crypto wasn’t like that. It was simple, fast, and more direct. So you get why I was fascinated.
Later on, I got to know that Web3 is beyond crypto. Then I dived into cryptography, infrastructure, and some core underpinnings of Web3.
These geeky part led to an end — coding.
The First Time I Thought of Coding as a Content Marketer
There was a time I was reading a blog post on the Ethereum website. After explaining a couple of concepts, I noticed the writer also added code snippets.
I found that geeky and fun. I know the writer successfully carried along two different sets of people — technical and non-technical folks.
I know that as a writer, my goal spans across 3 things most times: communication, education, and conversion.
In the instant case, the writer has communicated and educated sufficiently. At that point I told myself if I want to cater for more diverse audience, I should be able to communicate with the devs.
That was how my Solidity development started. It’s been over a year now and the journey has been great.
Coding Made Me A Better Technical Writer in Web3
I always get this question from those who are new into technical writer or are enthusiasts:
“Do I need to know how to code to be a technical writer?”
My answer now is, “Why not?”
I’m a practising technical writer so I can say for a fact that coding makes you understand the developer audience more.
When you write their language, face bugs like that, build products like they do, then you can write what meets their needs.
And like I would always say, coding is not that hard to understand. You know, it was just like how folks hyped Maths when we were in High School.
With practice and consistency, you’d wing it. My ability to build smart contracts has not only made me a more authoritative technical writer, it has also gotten me high-paying jobs.
